No Soliciting

I have been meaning to explain the tile of my blog for some time and haven't gotten around to it. I live in a community that has No Soliciting signs posted. I naively thought that this meant people would not be knocking on my door. The first time it was two Mormon's. I was so shocked I took the pamphlet and asked them to come back tomorrow, knowing I would not be there. The next time, a young guy selling magazines said it was for his college communications class. I was not in a good mood and told him I was not interested. He started to get pushy and I frankly asked him why he was there since there were posted No Soliciting. He said he spoke with someone that morning and they said it was okay. (It was 8:30 at night and I knew he was lying.) I asked him that if I called down to this other person, she would tell me that she sent him over. He asked me if I was always this bitchy, and I told him bitchy would be calling the police, which I would do shortly if he didn't remove himself from the area. He quickly did just that. This last time was the night before I created my blog. I was outside with my not-so-miniature-dachshund, who thinks she is a rottweiler, and the guy was knocking on someone else's door. He asked if I could answer a question for him, and being stupid, I said okay (after assuring Bad Dog that she would live so she would stop the barking and growling.) Then he started asking me about where I get my oil changed and if I thought some load of information would be a good deal. It finally dawned on me that he was not knocking on his friend's door, but by that time I wasn't in the mood to lecture him about the No Soliciting. I said sure it sounded like a good deal and tried to walk to my door. Oh no, that was not an option. He kept going and asked if I would be interested, why wouldn't I be interested, where did I currently take my car for oil changes, how much did I pay for oil changes, how many miles were on my car. I finally got away and couldn't help but wonder, why don't people acknowledge the No Soliciting? If I want something, I will come to your place of business and get it. I do not work at home. Home is where I relax. There is nothing relaxing about having to calm down Bad Dog every time a stranger knocks on my door. I understand you are just doing your job, but do it where No Soliciting is not posted. If you are looking for a lost cat, feel free to knock. If you just wanted to let me know my car lights are on, feel free to knock. If you need to borrow a cup of flour, feel free to knock (I won't have any because I don't cook) but knock away and we can have a nice talk. If you are selling anything or want me to try your product, store, religion; stay away!

You never sold magazines door-to-door for one of your classes, so I think he was lying.

Oh I feel your pain! I just posted my 'No Soliciting' sign on my door two days ago after too many sales people. Not 24 hours later some guy comes to my door, I say "Can't you read this sign?'.

He thought it was okay because he wasn't selling anything. I think I am going to type up a piece of paper with the definition of 'soliciting' on it and give it to anyone that comes to the door.

I bought a sign off of the internet a few months back. I was suspect that it would even do anything. But honestly, I can see a major difference. The sign is in my flower bed, so they can see the sign before they even get close to my door. I guess they say, if she went through the trouble of actually placing one at her house, then she really don't want to be solicited. Anyway, a good sign is hard to find. The only ones that I saw that I liked were at www.mydoorspam.com

I have a handmade sign that says "NO SOLICITING no newspapers, no magazines. " because I got tired of all the kids claiming they're selling the magazines to go to college. I am currently a college student who pay my own way through college, they can too. The guilt trip doesn't work on someone in the same position. I was originally just going to write NO SOLICITING until I could get a real sign, but I thought someone might be stupid which is why I put the rest of it on there; y'know what happened? There hasn't been a knock since.

I think that by having the NO SOLICITING sign up gives you the right to bitch them out =P. If any do show up and ignore the sign, they'll get an earful from me!

I made my own sign:
"Soliciters will be HASSLED!"

Soliciters will hide behind technicalities like "This isn't soliciting, I don't want any money from you" or "This is for non-profit". The fact of the matter is, and deep down EVERYONE knows this: We put "No Soliciting" signs on our doors because we don't want YOU knocking!

People who are allowed to knock on my door:
Friends
Family
Neighbors
Police/Fire
Trick-or-Treat'ers
Boy/Girl Scouts
K-12 students in my District (I fully support local K-12 fundraisers)
One who needs EMERGENCY help

If you're not on this list, prepare to watch me dissect and invalidate your reasons for standing on my doorstep!

Ugh, thank you for posting this! I'm glad I'm not the only person on the planet who is completely annoyed by this. I wrote a short note about a guy who knocked on my door recently and accused me of being racist because I 'didn't want any'! http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1590023/sick_and_tired_of_the_racist_double.html?cat=9

Actually "No Soliciting" excludes religious and political groups that do not request money. Legally it refers mainly to the commercial selling of some product. Putting flyers on someone's door is not considered soliciting either. So unless someone is trying to sell you something for money, they have the legal right to go knocking.
